40 Habits That Damage Your Hair

Habits that damage your hair. As we age, our hair becomes more dry, fragile, brittle, and prone to breakage. To reduce these issues, The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Association suggests wearing a hat when outside, and to wash our hair after exposing our hair to chemicals such as chlorine because it can be harmful toward our hair. The AAD also says we should be careful around products and treatments that make hair curly, straight, and change its color.

Hair loss can happen for a variety of reasons, and premature hair shedding could be in our genes. Some possible causes could be from hair disorders like hereditary thinning, alopecia, underlying medical conditions, illness, cancer treatments, trichotillomania, stress, menopause, weight loss, poor nutrition, certain prescription medication, excessive heat styling, and improper care in washing, drying, and combing.

Hair is already dead, but there are ways we can keep it looking lively. We can change our bad hair habits that can potentially be harmful to our hair. Simple changes are easy to switch out in our routines. Some easy changes are to be gentler when using shampoo and conditioner in the shower, letting our hair air dry or lowering the heat from our blow dryers, and using a wide-tooth comb. Old habits die hard, but by avoiding these practices, we can keep our hair healthy longer.
